DEVELOPER X TECHNOLOGIST FOR HOLLYWOOD CAMERA SOCIETY

It started with a web consult, and became an original publishing platform, new & newly-available archival content for American Cinematographer while developing its digital footprint with then Web Director/now Publisher David Williams, and a new role at the ASC: Chief Technology Officer, working directly with the leadership, members, and staff to develop digital business & communication technology infrastructures and strategy for the membership organization and 100 year old monthly publication.

Brief

Improving the now and the future.

I ended up replacing, upgrading, or creating the Society’s entire hardware/software infrastructure while developing its first complete digital platform with documentation & strategy for their membership and publishing operations, resulting in significant workflow, interaction, and financial savings in the short and long term.

That process involved building a digital voting system to run all awards and membership elections online, developing an all new web publication system for American Cinematographer while in-housing production for the 70k mailing list used for educating and updating its audience on the latest in motion camera technology tools & techniques, empowering the ASC Committees including Vision, MITC, and Archive with web tools to better carry out their missions and expand their capabilities to new levels, and renegotiating existing contracts or bringing in new services that improved overall interaction quality and efficiency. This included upgrading the company to be fully remote-capable pre-COVID, which positioned us to not only to make that transition during the lockdown without downtime but also to capitalize on the situation and develop new  production models that greatly improved content, advertising, and revenue.

The ASC was founded for cinematographers to share knowledge and uplift each other, a mission I greatly admire and believe in. Members largely spend their time in the field, and rarely at the beloved Hollywood clubhouse, so I focused on expanding communications systems and interaction experiences to bring the clubhouse community to them wherever they are around the world.

As Web Producer I increased access to the previously incomplete and inaccessible ASC Archive, both the 1200+ issues and 400+ hours of tech tips and interviews which I helped make available to the public for the first time along with contributing original video, podcast, and print content.

As 35th ASC Awards Co-Producer I co-created the awards show digital event that brought the authentic experience to over 800 accounts sharing on average 3+ hours together, including many of whom would have not otherwise been able to attend.

And as CTO I created a membership voting platform that immediately increased participation in awards and elections >900%, a project management system for MITC to improve committee participation and publishing, and an intake/vetting system for the ASC Vision Mentorship program, along with other web tools & services for ASC Committees.
